What Will This
Look Like at Brown Memorial Woodbrook Presbyterian (USA) With Our Younger
Members
Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your
heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at
home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Bind them
as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write
them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deut.
6:7-9)
Worship
All children are welcome in
worship. When we celebrate Holy Communion, children of all ages may attend
worship with their families. Our preschool class meets on these Sundays.
Childcare is available during worship for ages 0-2. Communion instruction
takes place during the Celebration Rotation Workshops. The young people
participate with the faith community as we pray, sing, hear the Word, and
receive the sacrament together. On other Sundays, young people attend the
beginning of the service, leaving after "Time with Children" to
participate in the Celebration Rotation Workshops. Young people are
invited to be actively engaged in worship by becoming acolytes, singing
with the Magnifikids, or acting as lay liturgists (high school students
only).
Fellowship
Young people join the rest of
the congregation in the Narthex for refreshments and a time of hospitality
following the worship service. Periodic intergenerational gatherings and
celebrations occur on the first Sunday of the month, special holidays, or
occasions immediately following worship in Fellowship Hall. These
activities, coordinated by the Events Committee and the Christian
Education Team, strive to include activities (and food) for all ages.
Sunday Classes
- Celebration Rotation Workshops
Children attend workshops in
broadly-graded groups. Workshops are designed to highlight the biblical
stories through activities that engage the learners through a multi-media,
multi-learning style approach. Using Howard Gardner's learning theory of
multi-intelligences, we strive to honor the many ways children learn and
grow. The workshops focus on a specific story for several weeks, moving
from activity to activity so the people, action, and messages may come
alive and then be incorporated in daily living.
Childcare
Childcare for ages 0-2 is
provided throughout Sunday morning (9:30a.m. to 12:30 PM). Two regular, paid
childcare providers are on staff. The nursery is located in "Miriam's
Gift" in the Education Wing.
PYC
(Presbyterian Youth Connection)
High School Youth gather a few
times each month for fellowship, recreation, study, and service. These
gatherings are predominantly on the first and third Sundays of each month,
from 5:00-7:00 p.m., though the schedule varies for special events. In
cooperation with the Sunday morning program for youth, these evening times
allow for extended service projects, activities (otherwise known as stupid
games), and discussions flowing from Sunday mornings, and life in middle
school. Together, with a team of adult sponsors, PYC seeks to offer a
safe place to have fun, build friendships, and journey in faith with others.
A new addition is an Older Youth Group for those who have been confirmed
or are in high school.
Mission
Young people are urged to
participate in a variety of age-appropriate mission projects throughout
the year. The newly formed Brighton Gardens Mission for the Whole Family
project is one in which young people and members of their families
actively participate in developing an ongoing relationship with residents
at our neighboring Assisted Living Community on Charles Street. On the
fourth Sunday of every month, families go to Brighton Gardens immediately
following worship. They provide a brief service of worship for the
residents and then participate in an activity designed to get to know one
another.
The Domestic
ChurchWhen we come
to church at Brown Memorial Woodbrook, we are the gathered faith
community. At home, we are the domestic church. Children learn about and
grow in faith first and foremost at home. It is our responsibility (which
we promise at each baptism) as a gathered church to nurture and support
those who are raising children in faith. At Brown Memorial Woodbrook, we
offer programs designed to assist parents in creating a home environment
that encourages faith to flourish.
Pastoral Care
The pastoral care ministry is
one to which we are all called as Christians. In Celebration Workshops, we
will emphasize whenever possible the importance of caring for one another.
As a community, we model this for our children when they see us pray for
one another, take food to the sick, visit the homebound, and treat one
another with love and respect. Young people at Brown Memorial Woodbrook
receive pastoral visits by the staff just as adults in the community do.
Please call the office if a child is in need of professional pastoral care
or should be included on the prayer list just as you would an adult
member.
Magnifikids
Led by Music Director, Susan
Gonzalez, this program for children grades 2nd through 6th is held at 9:00
AM in the Choir Room, concurrent with the adult education classes.
Magnifikids participate in worship by sharing their singing throughout the
year.
The Celebration Rotation
Workshops - Called to Re-Member
Stories selected for this year will
emphasize the covenant we have with God and with another through our
baptism as disciples of Jesus Christ.

and events of the Celebration Rotation Workshops, see our Schedule
