Congregational Discernment

Tesserae Project Background

Background: The Omega Force

In April 2007, the Session (governing body) of the church appointed a five-person team to consider whether the congregation was ready for a process to revitalize our sense of mission.

The group, the Omega Force, met twice, and discussed the basic health of the church in light of recent history.  The group believed that it was time for the congregation as a whole to work on three primary questions: Who are we?  What do we believe God is calling us to do?  With whom should we be doing it?

In September the Session approved the recommendation and appointed a five-person team to guide a process of discernment.

That group adopted the name "Tesserae Project."  The name comes from the word for a piece of mosaic tile ("tessera"), and reflects the group's intention to guide a process of discernment that will honor individual differences while working toward a unified whole.

Background: Deep Shift

The Tesserae Project and Session subsequently decided to join a project of discernment being offered by the Presbtyery of Baltimore.  That project gathered 14 churches in Baltimore to consider changes we all need to make to respond to our changed and changing world.  The project is run by a church transformation group called "Deep Shift."

In the preliminary stage (the first six months) Deep Shift had members of the congregation complete two surveys, sent a consultant for a day-long on-site visit, and has led two day-long workshops for the 14 churches.  That groundwork resulted in a report to each congregation.

The Tesserae Project considered that report, and recommended to the Session in March 2008 that Brown Woodbrook continue with the Deep Shift process.  We look forward to engaging members of the congregation in the conversations so that we might see ourselves with fresh eyes and come to a shared understand of what webelieve God is calling us to be and do in this time and place.

The Deep Shift report and the Tesserae Project reports are available to read below.
